Kryptos is a sculpture that stands on the grounds of the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, USA.
It was created by artist Jim Sanborn, who installed it at the CIA in 1990…
It’s a copper, granite and wood sculpture, standing 12 feet tall, displaying 1800 characters, which contain four different encrypted messages…
In the years since Sanborn installed it, there have been numerous attempts to crack the code, and in 1992, some men from the National Security Agency did indeed manage to solve the first three encrypted messages…
In 1998 another employee of the CIA solved the first three, but, up until today, the fourth encrypted message has eluded all attempts to crack its code…
The first three solved messages are:
A poetic phrase, the coordinates to a distinct location within the grounds of the CIA, and an account of the opening of King Tutankhamun’s tomb…
In 2010 the artist, Sanborn, was so frustrated nobody had yet cracked the code of the last of the four messages he released a clue. He stated that a six-word section of letters was a code for the word “Berlin”…
Even then, no one could solve it, and he released another clue in 2014, revealing another five-word section of letters were encrypted code for the word “Clock”…
Yet, despite these clues and the passing of time, the final fourth message remains unsolved to this day…
This won’t stop people from trying, though…
